Free IT Athens work with Bethel Midtown Village is mentioned in this article in the Athens Banner-Herald. From the article:
Residents also highlighted a number of programs started to help educate Bethel residents, many of whom lack a high-school diploma.
"If you don't have an education, there's nowhere you can go (for a job), not even McDonald's," Joyner said.
Fourteen residents are enrolled in GED classes. The nonprofit Free IT Athens refurbished old computers, set up a computer center and offered training. The Athens Housing Authority cooked healthy lunches. Residents are starting up a child-care program so single mothers can work. And Barrow Elementary School, where Bethel children are zoned to attend, offers parents free transportation to school events.

I got back from a business trip last month and was ecstatic to find a letter from the IRS saying that Kids on Computers is officially a US federal 501(c)(3) organization!!!
It’s retroactive to February 25, 2009. (We have been a Colorado nonprofit since our start but this gives us federal status.)
Having 501(c)(3) status will enable us to qualify for more grants and programs targeted at nonprofit organizations. It also helps establish people’s trust (they know you are doing a public good) and enables some people to deduct their donation from the money they pay taxes on.
Many thanks to Serena Robb who filled out all the paperwork for us! It was her first time filling out a 501(c)(3) federal application and she did a lot of research to make sure she got it right.
This Thursday, August 19th, we will be having a special opportunity to volunteer refurbishing computers for the upcoming sales. July's board meeting has been moved from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM. It will still be held on July 10th at the ACTION building.
For the 2009 Install Fest, we were lucky enough to have half a dozen photographers roaming the event. There were a lot of great shots.
Every time I go in to Union Park, I think about how we transformed it into a computer lab for the day and, when we were done, returned it to it's normal state.
Here are some photos and more photos from the 2009 Install Fest.
The 2010 Linux Against Poverty install fest is being held this Saturday 11AM-6PM at Union Park. If you take great shots and would like to help us capture the memories this year, send me a note at lynnbender@geekaustin.org.
Free IT Athens t-shirts are here! You can see the front and back on Picasa. The cost is $18. We'll have them for sale at SouthEast LinuxFest and then at our regular open hours. They're screenprinted by Shirtworks in Athens, GA. The logo design is by Zach Alig. The blank shirts are from a California company, not a sweatshop.
Curt Hall and the folks at Genesis Today just provided Linux Against Poverty with 18 more computers for the install fest. These kind of donations really move us closer to this year's goal.
Genesis Today is an Austin-based provider of nutritional supplements and foods. They were ranked by Inc. Magazine as one of the “Top 500 Fastest Growing Companies” in the nation. You can find their Acai Berry and Goji Berry Juices locally at HEB, Sam's Club, and Walmart.
I'm happy to announce that Allen Y Chen, Jeff Beckham, and the Austinist team have joined Linux Against Poverty to help get the word out.
Last year, for the first Linux Against Poverty Install Fest, it was relatively easy to get computers. We basically hit up a bunch of people that we knew, and the companies that they worked for.
This year, we have enough volunteers to get about 400-500 computers in the hands of local kids who need them.
However, the challenge is going to be more difficult this year. We have to find additional sources for computers. We have to get the word out in front of more people.
Having the folks at the Austinist with us is going to help make our goal a possibility.
-Lynn
